In the music video for “Lover,” Taylor sets up the snow globe moment from “You Are In Love” as the promise of a home together with her love. She uses the metaphor of a doll’s house to take us inside this love, a “house with many rooms” (quote from Yann Martel).
What we should know about the house?
It’s a rainbow.
Notably, the bedroom is a warm, enveloping, feminine pink.
Or we could call it
Pynk, like the inside of your… baby Pynk behind all of the doors… crazy Pynk, like the tongue that goes down… maybe Pynk, like the paradise found Pynk when you’re blushing inside… baby Pynk is the truth you can’t hide… maybe Pynk, like the folds of your brain… crazy Pynk as we all go insane
Across the way is a blue bathroom, which contains a giant fishbowl.
In it, we see a Taylor already submerged, swimming. The man playing her love interest gets in and assumes a fetal position, as if he is trying to fit or not get in the way even as he clearly chose to get into the fishbowl with her.
…a very straightforward commentary on the fishbowl in which Taylor has been swimming round and round (see what we did there?) with her public love life. It’s also the one room where they don’t touch.
But take heart - at this late stage, Taylor may still be in the fishbowl… but her true lover has painted her golden.
Between the two rooms is a sunshine yellow closet.
The couple do not interact in this room together at all. In fact, it is the only uninhabited room in the video. This closet appears to have almost all and only feminine clothing. In Karlie “Sunshine” Kloss yellow.
The characters pass through the closet to get to the attic - a place where memories are kept and dusted off when needed. It’s also where we see Taylor’s words - or her truth.
That’s right - between the blue room and the pink room, a popular color scheme between which Taylor has toggled this era, is a yellow closet.
Passing through the closet is the only way to reach the memories, the real life love story, Taylor has shown us.
The rest is a series of tiny performances in a doll’s house.
I feel like all of the rooms in the little snow globe house represent a different emotion.
The blue room represents being sad and feeling kind of trapped in the fishbowl of the entertainment industry. She doesn’t feel like she’ll ever be able to find love while being so confined, but little did she know that her lover was there the whole time.
The green room represents envy of other couples or pining away for that real love. She’s wishfully writing songs about maybe meeting “the one” some day.
The yellow room represents that when her whole world was turned upside down, her love stayed with her and stuck by her side.
The pink room obviously represents blissful and happy love. Their bodies form a heart shape that shows that with this true love, Taylor’s journey of searching is finally complete.
The attic represents the part of herself that Taylor keeps pretty hidden from the world now. Her relationships and her hopes for love are hidden away, but when she finds her lover, she brings him into these intimate and secret parts of her because their trust is just as true as their love.
The whole snow globe concept also shows that Taylor has finally found the love she’s spend her entire life dreaming about. And I couldn’t be happier for her. 💖
